Cummins Boosts Dividend 10%, But Valuation Hurdle Remains

Read source article

What happened

Cummins announced a 10% dividend increase in September 2026, the second consecutive year of such a raise, signaling management's confidence in cash generation. Despite this positive, the stock's yield is only about 1.7% at current levels, and with a P/E of ~36 and EV/EBITDA of ~19, the market is already pricing in robust data-center power demand. Our DeepValue analysis rates CMI a WAIT, as Power Systems and Distribution are strong, but Accelera continues to weigh with a $(277)M EBITDA loss in Q1'26 and ongoing transition charges. The dividend increase is a modest positive but does not change the need for evidence on capacity execution and Accelera containment before we would consider entry closer to $600. Until then, we see better risk/reward elsewhere.

Implication

Long-term investors should view the dividend increase as a sign of Cummins' commitment to shareholder returns, but the current valuation leaves little margin of safety. We remain sidelined while Power Systems demand proves durability and Accelera stops generating large charges. A pullback toward $600 would provide an attractive entry, aligning with our base-case implied value of $680 and bear-case of $480. Above $780, we would consider trimming positions given the crowded AI/data-center narrative. In the meantime, monitor quarterly reports for capacity execution and evidence that raised FY2026 guidance (+8% to +11% revenue, 17.75%–18.50% EBITDA margin) is on track.

Thesis delta

The new dividend increase does not alter our fundamental thesis. It reinforces management's confidence in cash flow but does not address the key risks of Accelera losses and on-highway weakness. Our WAIT rating and valuation thresholds remain unchanged.
