Bitdeer Secures >$1.7B AI Cloud Offtake, Backlog at ~$2.9B
Read source articleWhat happened
Bitdeer announced a September 2026 production and operations update highlighting AI Cloud capacity expansion in Malaysia (67MW at A901 for Q2 2027 and 60MW at A103 for Q1 2028), plus contracted offtake of over 70% of its 21.7MW A201 facility in Johor Bahru. The A201 commitments are expected to generate more than $1.7 billion in revenue over five years, lifting total AI Cloud revenue backlog to approximately $2.9 billion. This directly addresses a key monitorable from our deep-value report: AI Cloud demand integrity, but the revenue is future and contingent on delivery milestones. While the backlog provides visibility, the company still faces negative consolidated gross margin (-20.7% in Q1 2026) and reliance on dilutive financing until project-level debt is secured. The update does not change the near-term need for a signed Tydal lease to unlock non-dilutive funding.
Implication
Investors should not extrapolate the $2.9 billion backlog into immediate GAAP revenue; delivery schedules stretch into 2027-2028 and execution risk remains. The contracted off-take may improve project financing prospects for AI data centers, but Bitdeer has not yet disclosed a signed lease for Tydal, the linchpin for non-dilutive capital. Even with backlog, consolidated gross margin is deeply negative and self-mining economics remain challenged, so cash burn will continue until AI Cloud revenue scales materially. The next 6-12 months require evidence that backlog converts to reported revenue and that management secures project-level debt instead of additional ATM/convert issuances. Rating remains WAIT with attractive entry near $10 and trim above $18; we would upgrade on confirmed Tydal lease and two consecutive quarters of positive gross margin.
Thesis delta
The AI Cloud backlog news strengthens the demand-side of the bear case, as it demonstrates real customer commitment. However, the thesis remains gated on financing: without a signed Tydal lease and project-level debt, dilution risk persists. We are not changing the WAIT rating; watch for conversion of backlog to GAAP revenue.
