Ramaco Q3 Loss Wider Than Expected, Revenue Beats; Maintain WAIT

Read source article

What happened

Ramaco Resources reported a Q3 2026 net loss of $0.32 per share, wider than the Zacks consensus estimate of a $0.26 loss and worse than the $0.25 per share loss in the same quarter last year. However, the company topped revenue estimates, suggesting volumes or pricing held up better than feared despite the challenging met coal market. Ramaco's core metallurgical coal business remains under pressure from weak global steel demand and low seaborne coal prices, which have already pushed the company into losses over the past several quarters. The stock has been extremely volatile over the past year, with a massive spike and subsequent crash, and the latest earnings miss aligns with the cautious stance in our master report, which values the shares at roughly $13.42 per share versus a recent price near $14.35. While the revenue beat provides some relief, the widening loss and negative interest coverage keep the risk-reward balanced, and we maintain a WAIT rating.

Implication

The wider-than-expected quarterly loss underscores the cyclical headwinds in the met coal market, and we see no catalyst on the horizon to reverse that trend in the near term. The revenue beat, however, indicates that Ramaco is still moving product, and its low-cost position may help it survive until prices recover, but that could take years. The Brook Mine rare earths project remains a high-risk, high-reward wildcard, and until it shows tangible progress, it should not be a primary reason to own the stock at this level. Given the stock trades above our conservative DCF estimate and interest coverage is negative, there is limited margin of safety for new buyers. We would only become more constructive if we see sustained met coal price recovery, operating cash flow comfortably covering capex and interest, or credible de-risking at Brook; otherwise, we maintain a WAIT and suggest investors monitor the key watch items.

Thesis delta

The thesis remains WAIT. The Q3 loss was slightly worse than expected, but it does not fundamentally alter our view that the stock is roughly fairly valued given the cyclical downturn and speculative Brook option. The revenue beat is a modest positive, but until we see a return to positive earnings and cash flow, we see no reason to upgrade.
