Rigetti's 2026 slide deepens as sector dilution fears and fidelity gap cast doubt on three-year trajectory
Read source articleWhat happened
Rigetti Computing shares have fallen roughly 49% year-to-date, with the decline exacerbated by a sector-wide sell-off after IonQ's equity offering reignited dilution fears among quantum investors. The company's 108-qubit Cepheus system still posts two-qubit fidelity of about 99.1%, a level management itself disclosed and which remains well short of the 99.9% target set for the next three years. That technical gap sits at the heart of the bear case: if scaling fidelity does not improve, the chiplet architecture cannot support meaningful commercial workloads, making the current $5.5 billion market capitalization look increasingly unsupported by the $9.5 million in first-half revenue and $54 million operating loss. Rigetti does retain a $541 million cash cushion with no debt, and it has real research-scale deployments like the C-DAC order and PSC testbed, but those catalysts are still pending proof of conversion to recurring revenue. The stock now trades near the lower end of our scenario range, and the burden has shifted to management to demonstrate both technical progress and disciplined funding without excessive dilution.
Implication
Investors should treat Rigetti as a speculative call option on quantum adoption, where the next six months are critical. If the 108-qubit fidelity shows no improvement from 99.1% by year-end, the technical thesis weakens materially and the stock could retest the $10 bear-case level. Conversely, a definitive CHIPS agreement with non-punitive terms plus visible progress toward 99.5% fidelity could reignite upside toward $20. Given the sector's heightened sensitivity to dilution, any equity raise, even government-linked, will be scrutinized harshly, so management must communicate funding plans clearly. Our base case remains $16, but with the stock now trading near $12, the asymmetry has improved for patient investors who can tolerate further downside; however, position sizes should remain small until one of the key catalysts actually lands.
Thesis delta
Our prior WAIT rating hinged on four milestones over 6-9 months; two of those — Commerce award conversion and fidelity improvement — remain unconfirmed and, in the case of fidelity, have shown no progress. The sector's negative reaction to peer dilution increases the probability that any Rigetti funding event will be dilutive and poorly received. Consequently, we lower our near-term conviction slightly and tighten our re-assessment window to 3 months, with a bias to reduce if the year-end fidelity checkpoint fails.
